Goku wears a few outfits in Dragon Ball Anime. Some of the them look the same, the only difference is the symbol on the costume. When cosplayers are going to cosplay as Goku, many may get confused.
Now I’m going to write some introduction and meaning to these different symbols. Hope you’ll know which one to choose.
1. First one, the symbol on the costume is
This is Master Roshi’s kanji, pronounced kame and meaning “turtle”, is the kanji that all of those trained under Master Roshi are given to wear after completing their training. This kanji is a patch worn on the top right side of the Turtle School uniform, and on a much larger patch on the back.

Goku was trained by Master Roshi when he was a kid, so this is the first costume he wears. And if you’re buy a goku costume for your kid, this is the best one to choose.
And Goku competed in the World Martial Arts Tournament wearing this outfit.
Two other characters who also has worn the same outfit. You can also cosplay as them using just one costume. Or you can form a group cosplay. This is the costume you should wear when you attend the con togerther with them.
Krillin (Goku’s lifelong best friends)
Yamcha (once an enemy of Goku, but later became a friend and ally)
2. Second one, the symbol on the costume is
It is Goku’s kanji, pronounced Go (meaning “wisdom” or “enlightenment”) is the kanji that Goku adopts after his training in preparation for the upcoming battles on Namek. Goku continues to wear this kanji until the arrival of the Androids.
So this is the costume you should choose when the cosplay background is Namek.
Goku’s son Gohan has also worn this outfit once, you can also cosplay as him. And it is also a good choice if a father is cosplaying together with his son.
3. Third one, the symbol on the costume is
It is King Kai’s kanji, pronounced kaiō and meaning “world king” King Kai wears these two kanji on a large, round patch on the front of his uniform. When Goku dons it, he wears it only on the back of his uniform, keeping the Master Roshi kanji on the top right of the front of his uniform. Yamcha wears it in reverse to Goku, having the Kai kanji on the front and the Master Roshi kanji on the back.
